Sonata (2015)
for clarinet and piano. 10 min.
This is one of the first pieces I wrote during my undergraduate degree at Rutgers. I had played the Poulenc Sonata, the Bernstein Sonata, the Saint-Saëns Sonata, and Muczynski’s Time Pieces in my clarinet lessons, and I decided to write my own sonata. I did not want to be limited by my own playing ability while writing this, so I wrote it without intending to perform it myself. I attempted to create melodic material that used the opening four notes of the clarinet throughout the piece.
